CNA photo by LARRY PETERSON Signing day: Southwestern 6-10 sophomore center Anthony Davis of Clarinda, shown with Spartan coach Jerry Drymon, signs a national letter-of-intent Wednesday with Division I South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits are in the Summit League, and a member of the coaching staff is assistant Rob Klinkefus of Harlan. Davis plans to major in history education. He is the first SWCC signee with a Division I program since Ben Slane at Drake in 1998. Al Stewart played at Drake more recently, but attended Southwestern only one year before transferring to DMACC.

CNA sports editor Wednesday was a big day for Anthony Davis. The Southwestern Community College sophomore signed a Division I letter-on-intent for a full ride scholarship in the morning, and came out of the gates with 16 of his game-high 22 points in the first half in a big Spartan victory Wednesday night. A signee with South Dakota State, the 6-10 Davis shot 10-of-14 from the field to lead the Spartans in a 111-78 victor over Culver-Stockton JV of Canton, Mo. “Anthony came out pretty fired up to play after the signing,” coach Jerry Drymon said. “Then he had guys 6-3 and 6-4 guarding him, so he should have had a big game, and he did.” After Davis lit up the first half with a 46-29 Spartan lead, 6-7 freshman Drew Godwin scored all of his 15 points in the second half. “Drew had 15 points and nine rebounds,” Drymon said. “He’s an effort guy. He plays hard.” Freshman guard Tyler Raasch of Nodaway Valley caught fire from behind the 3-point arc, shooting 3-of-4 on treys in a 13-point effort. He also had four assists and two steals. “Tyler is doing a nice job for us,” Drymon said. “We’re counting on him to stick in some threes, and he got hot last night.” Royce Phillips had a team-high 10 rebounds and quick 5-9 guard Terrance Morgan made five steals along with four assists in a good fast break attack as the Spartans topped the century mark for the second time in a 4-0 start. Drymon takes his team to Trenton, Mo., this weekend to face Division I Marshalltown Community College and the host school, North Central Community College. He said the competition level will rise. “I thought (Wednesday) was a good game offensively for us, but we gave up 49 points in the second half,” Drymon said. “We got in some bad habits defensively, which you can’t do against the quality of opponent we’ll have in our league.” CULVER-STOCKTON JV (78) — Andy Anders 8 3-3 22, Curtis Crawford 8 1-2 17, Tyrone Davis 4 7-7 16, Curtis Hayward 2 2-2 7, Ryan Jones 2 1-1 6, Brian McNeff 3 0-2 6, Zach Higgins 2 0-1 5. Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
