CNA sports writer Turnovers nearly did in the Southwestern women’s basketball team Friday night against the William Penn JV. The Spartans committed 24 turnovers, but had four players in double-figures to hold on for a 74-67 win over the Statesmen. “Just not taking care of the ball is what hurt us in that first half,” said Southwestern coach Buck Scheel. “We came out in the second half and took care of it a little better. It was definitely nice to see that they had some fight in them and could hold in there enough for the win.” Tiffany Troutwine led the Spartans with 21 points while CeCe Wright added 18. Nicole Meyer collected a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Kim Wolfer had 12 points. William Penn’s Kristin Shields, a graduate from Murray last year, led the Statesmen with 20 points. Shields helped William Penn out to a quick start, taking an early 8-4 advantage. But with the Spartans trailing just 13-12, Southwestern went on an 11-0 run. A Shields 3-pointer cut the lead back to 23-18, but after a Shields layin made it just a three-point game, buckets by Troutwine and Wolfer helped push the lead to 36-32 at halftime. The Statesmen took a 37-36 lead to start the second half with a Shields jumper. With Southwestern holding a 58-56 lead at the 4:05 mark of the second half, the Spartans went on a 12-1 run over the next 2:25 to put the game away.
