Second-half spurts lift Southeast over SpartansBy BEN FROTSCHER - CNA sports writer
In a game of runs, Southeast Nebraska used spurts of 14-2 and 12-2 in the second half to take a 73-57 victory over the Southwestern women’s basketball team Sunday afternoon. The Spartans (4-7 overall) led 36-29 at halftime, but scored just 21 points in the second half. “We went into halftime with a lot of energy, but we came out and were in stall mode,” said Southwestern coach Buck Scheel. “We had a tough time getting the ball to fall and that hurt us down the stretch. There were several layups that went in and out and we missed a lot of opportunities.” An Ashley Strickland shot for Southeast gave the Storm a 23-16 lead midway through the first half, but a 15-1 run over the next 5:30 shifted momentum to the Spartans. Kim Wolfer and CeCe Wright dominated that run, with Wolfer scoring seven and Wright adding six during that span. But coming out of halftime, that lead dwindled quickly. After a pair of Anna Waymaster free throws early in the second half, Southeast went on a 14-2 run to take a 49-41 lead with 11:28 left in the ballgame. The Storm made three 3-pointers during that run, but Southwestern cut the deficit to 54-48 with a Wright layin with 8:52 remaining. The Storm rallied back with a 12-2 run to push the lead to 66-50 with 4:24 remaining. Elisha Sheppard had nine of her 26 points during the final run, a player that the Spartans had trouble controlling all day. “She shot the ball really well the last time we played,” said Scheel. “I had told our team that we had to know where she was. When you don’t take away the shots early, they were going to keep shooting.” Wolfer and Wright each had 17 points for the Spartans, who are off now until a Jan. 7 home game against Iowa Western.
