Depth leads Reivers past SWCCBy BEN FROTSCHER
CNA sports writer Iowa Western literally had at least two bodies for every one Southwestern women’s basketball player. With the Spartan roster dwindling down to six players due to the injury of forward Cortni Livengood and Reivers bringing 13 players Monday night, the Spartans were outnumbered and outmatched in an 80-46 loss. Southwestern lost 89-41 on Nov. 27 to Iowa Western and Spartan coach Buck Scheel said he saw improvement in his team from the previous meeting. “I don’t think they (Iowa Western) seemed as comfortable with what we were running,” said Scheel. “We were running a little bit different defensive sets and offensively, we just kind of struggled. If we could have gotten going early, it could have been a different story.” Turnovers by Iowa Western (12-7 overall) helped keep the Spartans in the ballgame early. The Reivers committed three turnovers in the first 1:42 and seven just 6:15 into the game. With the turnovers, the Spartans kept the game tied at 2-2 and 4-4, but never got the lead. Iowa Western broke open the game with a 10-0 run midway through the first half, building a 23-9 lead, but the Spartans held it together and trailed by 10 at halftime. The Reivers jumped on Southwestern in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 43-19. CeCe Wright led Southwestern with 14 points. Kayla Williams, a 5-6 freshman guard, led Iowa Western with 17 points. The Spartans (4-8 overall, 1-1 ICCAC) host Marshalltown Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for a league match.
