Spartan men rally for road victoryCEDAR FALLS — Southwestern men overcame a slow start to overtake Mount Mercy JV Monday night, 79-72. The Spartans trailed 38-28 at halftime. “We got after it out of the break and took our first lead at 44-42,” coach Jerry Drymon said. “It was the first time we really pressed all year. We pressed to create some energy and tempo. They packed in a zone the entire game and we took a few too many jump shots early. Then we started driving and creating things to get to the line.” Southwestern improved to 9-4 with the victory over Drymon’s alma mater, still coached by Paul Gavin, in his 16th year. Drymon still has the school’s second-highest single-season scoring record of 680 points in 1996-97, and second-highest all-time rebounding average of 11.9 that season. “Oh yeah, it looks very familiar,” Drymon said. “They still run the secondary break, and a lot of the same sets, and the zone defense.” Former Spartan guards Dillon Allen and Eric Raasch are part of the Mustang varsity squad, averaging 6.2 and 2.3 points, respectively. Allen has started 10 games and Raasch has six starts. Another former Southwestern player, Cyle Clapper, is on the Mount Mercy JV and scored six points Monday. Ryckey Harper led a balanced Spartan squad with 15 points. Terrance Morgan tallied 12 points, including 6-of-7 free throw shooting, and Anthony Davis provided a second-half spark with 10 of his 12 points after intermission. Tyler Raasch and Laurice Ellison each notched 11 points. As a team Southwestern was 19-25 at the line compared to Mount Mercy’s 8-14. Southwestern travels to Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls Wednesday in league action.
