Panthers sweep Shenandoah; Creston/O-M leads John Harris Tourney

Creston boys 65, Shenandoah 32 Creston started the game on a 23-6 run and never looked back in a 65-32 romp of Shenandoah. Grant Wood led the Panthers with 21 points while Cody Pearson added 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Creston led just 29-18 at halftime, but used an 18-6 advantage in the third quarter to put the game out of distance. The Panthers now stand at 9-4 overall and 9-3 in Hawkeye 10 play. Creston girls 53, Shenandoah 30 SHENANDOAH — Creston came away with a 53-30 win over Shenandoah Friday night. The Panthers, now 8-6 overall and 7-5 in the Hawkeye 10, led 28-9 at halftime. Cassie Abbott and Meghin Krambeck each led Creston with 11 points. John J. Harris Invitational CORNING — Creston/Orient-Macksburg holds a big command after Friday’s two rounds of the John J. Harris Invitational in Corning. The Panthers have eight semifinalists and lead the 22-team pack with 98.5 points. Neola Tri-Center is second with 76.5, followed by Clarinda 74, Nodaway Valley 66 and Winterset 50. Bedford/Lenox has scored 38.5 points, Mount Ayr has 34 and Corning 17.5. Narrowly missing the semifinals for Creston/O-M were heavyweight Casey Tanner, a 1-0 loser to fourth-seeded Michael Mellencamp of Clarinda; 145-pounder Brody Jay, leading third-seeded Kyle Ring of Tri-Center in the second period before Ring reversed for the winning pinning combination; and 189-pounder Jared Bevins in a 3-2 loss to third-seeded Cody Redinbaugh of Tri-Center. Advancing on an upset was 215-pounder Kaleb Livingston, with a 7-4 decision over second-seeded Clark Allen of Corning. John Young (112), Jay, Bevins and Tanner are all eligible for consolation wrestling Saturday morning. The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
