Depth continued to be a problem for the Southwestern women’s basketball team. With only seven suited for Wednesday night’s game with top-ranked Iowa Central, the Tritons had 10 players score in an 81-51 rout in lCCAC league action. The Spartans took early leads of 2-0 and 4-2 on free throws from Anna Waymaster and Nicole Meyer, but Iowa Central took control. Clinging to an 11-10 lead, the Tritons went on a 13-2 run to take a 24-12 advantage. Another run of 16-3 helped Iowa Central build a 47-24 halftime lead. “We did OK with the start and I told them to not be intimidated and go out and take it to them,” said Southwestern coach Buck Scheel. “When we started missing shots and getting behind, we got beat mentally. We’re not very mentally tough right now. We haven’t won for a while and when you don’t do the little things, you’re not going to beat anyone.” The Spartans scored 10 of their 24 points from the free-throw line in the first half, but in the second half, Southwestern couldn’t get the deficit any closer than 21 points. Iowa Central applied the knockout punch with a 19-2 run over a seven minute span in the second half. Iowa Central (19-0 overall, 8-0 ICCAC) was led by 16 points from Jessica Hunecke. CeCe Wright and Kim Wolfer each collected 12 points for Southwestern. Up next for the Spartans (4-13 overall, 1-5 ICCAC) is a road game at Kirkwood on Saturday. To end the streak, Scheel said his team has to want the win. “You have to play through it and earn a win,” said Scheel. “It’s not easy when you’ve lost seven in a row, but you have to play hard and earn a win to build that confidence.” IOWA CENTRAL (81) — Jessica Hunecke 16, Danni Huss 12, Abby Brend 10, Jacqe Markert 9, Morgan Brown 9, Whitney Griffin 7, Kylie Dilla 6, Angela Brinkmeyer 5, Danielle Condon 5, Britnee Hansen 2. SOUTHWESTERN (51) — CeCe Wright 12, Kim Wolfer 12, Tiffany Troutwine 11, Anna Waymaster 6, Christina Motley 6, Nicole Meyer 4. Rebounds — 25 (Wolfer 9, Cortni Livengood 7). Assists — 16 (Wright 7, Troutwine 5). Steals — 14. Turnovers — 29. ICCC — 47 81 SWCC — 24 51 —————— Ben Frotscher can be reached at 782-2141, ext. 246 or bfrotscher@crestonnews.com

Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
