When Anthony Davis scored the first 12 points of the game, the note was set for a Southwestern blowout Monday. The Spartan men sped to a 21-4 lead in the opening six minutes on the way to a 105-55 victory over an overmatched Central College JV team. By halftime, Southwestern had a 58-17 lead and Davis had scored 16 of his game-high 25 points. The 6-10 sophomore from Clarinda played little in the final 10 minutes as reserves played out the finish. There was still 3:12 remaining when the Spartans passed the century mark on a drive into the lane by Will Wilson for a 101-50 command. Recruiter present It was a good night for Davis to assert himself. Watching in the bleachers was South Dakota State assistant coach Rob Klinkefus, 1996 Harlan graduate and former Buena Vista assistant. Davis has signed to play Division I at SDS next year, and Klinkefus was on campus checking up on his latest recruit. “We got the ball inside early and Anthony was posting up hard,” coach Jerry Drymon said. “He wasn’t hesitating, even if they were doubling on him. He’d still turn and get the shot off. He was doing what he needs to do when he’s got six or seven inches on kids.” Six Spartans scored in double figures. “It was good for some of those guys to lay more minutes tonight,” Drymon said. “You never know when you’ll need somebody. Stuff happens.” Sophomore post player Laurice Ellison continues to recover from a strained shoulder muscle and provided 12 points in limited play Monday. However, freshman wing player Chris Santiago sat out with a twisted knee. Looking ahead Drymon used the game as a tuneup for Wednesday’s big conference matchup at home with 14th-ranked Des Moines Area Community College. “Offensively, tonight was as good as we’ve played against the zone,” Drymon said. “That’s good, because we’re going to continue to see zone. Somebody besides Tyler (Raasch) hit some threes for us tonight, so that’s a good sign. DMACC has a typical Orv Salmon team. They will be physical and athletic, and we have to match that physical style. Laurice is in some pain when he raises his hands above his heads, but he’s a tough kid and he’ll give us what he can.” The Spartan men play DMACC in the second game Wednesday after the women’s 5:30 p.m. tipoff. Central’s JV was led Monday by former Shenandoah prep Brian Laughlin with 10 points. Two other former Creston opponents were in post positions, as Tyler Halcomb of Dallas Center-Grimes scored five points and Ballard’s Austin Begg had four points. Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
