Sign-up deadline nears for career adventure trips

Two career adventure trips for area youth are planned for the month of March. Students will have a chance to explore careers in natural resources, animal science and veterinarian medicine, forensics, engineering and horticulture as part of the adventure series offered by Nodaway Valley Middle School AmeriCorps and Adair County Extension, with special funding from the Adair, Adams and Union County Decategorization Project. The programs are open to students from Adair, Adams and Union County. Natural resource careers will be the focus of an overnight adventure to Springbrook State Park. Students and adult chaperones are slated to depart Greenfield 7:30 a.m. March 24 and return at noon March 25. The overnight trip is open to all sixth-through eighth-graders. The group will be staying in the dormitory-type lodging at the education center. During the two-day adventure they will be participating in a series of hands-on activities including shooting archery, going on a night owl walk and orienteering with topographic maps. Pick-up points can be arranged for Orient, Fontanelle and the I-80 Greenfield exit. The registration deadline is Monday. There is a $20 fee that covers transportation, meals, and lodging. Need-based scholarships are available. A one-day trip to the campus of Iowa State University is planned for March 26 for sixth-through eighth-graders interested in careers in animal science or veterinarian medicine, forensics, engineering and horticulture. Parents are invited to attend as well. The day will include tours and hands-on workshops. In addition, participants will eat with current students in one of ISU’s dining halls and learn more about preparing for college. High school students interested in being mentors to the younger students are invited to sign up, too. Plans are to depart Greenfield 7:30 a.m. March 26 and return by 5 p.m. Pick-up points can also be arranged for Orient, Fontanelle and Stuart. Registration is needed by Monday. There is a registration fee of $7.50. Scholarships are available. All area youth are invited to participate in the career adventure trips. Any child that currently qualifies for the free and reduced lunch program is eligible for at least a partial scholarship for either or both events. Registration materials are available at the Adair County Extension office in Greenfield or on our web site at www.extension.iastate.edu/adair/news/careertrips.htm For more information, contact the Extension office at 641-743-8412 or 1-800-ISUE399.

As protesters swarm the streets of Iran against the recent re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the level of United States involvement is being questioned. Where do we belong in this effort?
Stay out of it. It's none of our business.
Support the protesters.
Be on the side of the Ahmadinejad supporters.
I don't know anything about it.
