Spartan softball sweeps pair of games
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — On day two of the Snowbird Tournament Tuesday, the Southwestern softball team swept two schools from the northeast — Northampton of Pennsylvania and Alfred State of New York.
In game one, the Spartans rolled to an 8-0 win over Northampton. Ashtyn Neill picked up the win by allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out two.
Former Creston softball player Brittney Auten continued her hot streak at the plate by going 3-for-4 in the game with a home run in the seventh inning.
Kaylee Harris was also 2-for-3 for Southwestern with a pair of RBIs.
“After the first day, we were happy with one out of two wins,” said Southwestern coach Lindsay Stumpff. “Today the kids came ready to play and they were talking on the field and the dugout. They looked like a college softball team and they’re here to win.”
That momentum carried over into the second game, where the Spartans took an 11-2 five-inning win over Alfred State. Tiffany Coon, a Rockwell City-Lytton graduate, picked up her first collegiate win in the circle after allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Spartans jumped right out on Alfred State, scoring five runs in the first and second innings. An Erin Newbury home run in the second inning was the highlight early on.
“In all four games, we’ve scored in the first inning of each game,” said Stumpff. “It’s a confidence builder and it makes us hungry for more. We’re getting a little greedy.”
Newbury had a pair of hits and four RBIs in the win while Angie Hawkins went 2-for-3 at the plate. Neill also drove in three RBIs.
