Eastern Oklahoma sweeps SWCC baseball

WILBURTON, Okla. — The struggles continued for the Southwestern baseball team at the plate as Eastern Oklahoma swept a doubleheader from the Spartans Thursday, 13-3 and 16-3. And now through eight games, the Spartans are hitting just .198 while their opponents have been batting a blistering .363. “We’ve given up 99 runs in eight games and we’ve only scored 19,” said Southwestern coach Bill Krejci. “We’re getting knocked around pitching-wise and these are quality teams. We’d like to be in a couple of these games and we haven’t been.” In the first game of the doubleheader, Eastern Oklahoma jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and rolled to the 13-3 five-inning win. Jason Champ took the loss on the mound after pitching three innings. “Champ got behind a few batters early on and walked a few,” said Krejci. “In the third, he did the same thing — walked one and hit a batter. They’re going to hit the ball and you can’t give them any free passes. Jake Zwiefel did a good job in the fourth and they kind of lit him up in the fifth.” Josh Myers and Brett Schreyer each had home runs for the Spartans while Schreyer collected two RBIs. An 11-run fourth inning proved to the be the difference in game two as Eastern Oklahoma took a 16-3 victory. The Spartans trailed just 5-2 heading into the fourth inning. “We dropped two balls in the outfield and they had hits here and there too,” said Krejci. “They lit us up pretty good. We’re just not playing very good right now. We need to field the ball a little better. Pitching is pretty marginal and we’re getting behind good batters.” Eastern Oklahoma knocked out eight extra base hits in five innings while Southwestern’s Teddy Gutman had a double and three hits. Andres Castro took the loss for the Spartans on the mound. Southwestern (0-8 overall) travels to Arkansas-Fort Smith today for a doubleheader. Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
