Spartan softball swept in weekend play

The Southwestern softball team lost a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend to Iowa Lakes Friday and Simpson’s JV Sunday.
On Friday, the Spartans were swept by Iowa Lakes 6-0 and 17-5. In game two, Southwestern trailed just 6-4, but Iowa Lakes started hitting the ball to put the game away. Iowa Lakes had 15 hits in game two.
“It was a game until the fourth inning when they scored three runs,” said Southwestern coach Lindsay Stumpff. “We were down 6-4 and we just couldn’t capitalize with key hits when we had runners on base. That’s one of our weak points right now.”
On Sunday, the Spartans lost 4-0 and 10-3 to Simpson’s JV. Former Interstate 35 pitcher Kelsey Knutson picked up the win in game one for the Storm. In game two, the Spartans committed eight errors in a 10-3 loss. In Sunday’s doubleheader, the Spartans had just 10 hits.
“We’re not getting the key hits from the big hitters,” said Stumpff. “Our three through five batters are struggling and those are supposed to be the ones that produce.”
