Spartan softball splits with Kirkwood

CEDAR RAPIDS — For Southwestern softball coach Lindsay Stumpff, this may be a turning point in the season. Entering Monday’s doubleheader with Kirkwood, the Spartans were on an eight-game losing streak. After losing the first game of the doubleheader by an 8-0 score, things weren’t looking much better. But the Spartans came out in game two and pulled out a 7-4 win. “Our team realized that they’re capable of playing with every team,” said Stumpff. “We scored right away and kept pounding away the rest of the game. It was the first game we took advantage of their mistakes.” With the game tied at 1-1, the Spartans used three runs in the sixth inning to pull away with the victory. Ashtyn Neill picked up the win in the circle. Southwestern (9-20 overall, 2-14 ICCAC) travels to Central Columbus (Neb.) today for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
