Spartans sweep Central Columbus

COLUMBUS, Neb. — Southwestern extended its win streak to three games Tuesday with a sweep of Central Columbus. “It was nice getting those two wins after the big win against Kirkwood,” said SWCC softball coach Lindsay Stumpff. “We did come out kind of sluggish, but we handled them pretty good here. We might have reverted back to that and played at their level.” The Spartans beat Central Columbus a combined 30-8 in a doubleheader earlier this season. In the game one 6-5 victory, the Spartans pounded out 16 hits with seven different players having multiple hits. Catcher Angie Hawkins led the team by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI while Creston native Brittney Auten was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Tiffany Coon picked up the win in the circle after allowing 11 hits and one walk while striking out five. Ashtyn Neill collected the game two win after allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five. Neill led the Spartans at the plate in the game two 4-1 win, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Stumpff said her team had to survive some tough playing conditions to gain the sweep. “The weather conditions were something I haven’t seen ever playing or coaching,” said Stumpff. “It was like we were in the desert. There was nothing blocking the wind and we were in the dugout where the wind was blowing right at us.” The Spartans (11-21 overall) host a doubleheader with Muscatine today starting at 2 p.m. Muscatine will be moving to Division I next season. Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
