Spartan golf plays 36 holes in one day

OTTUMWA — Due to weather conditions Friday, the Southwestern golf team played 36 holes Saturday at the 1st Credit Union Spring Invitational hosted by Indian Hills Community College. “We started at 8 a.m. and went to 6:30,” said Southwestern golf coach Ron “Fox” Clinton. “It was a challenge. Our kids had never played 36 holes in one day and we played well.” With just three golfers playing Saturday, the Spartans were playing on an individual basis. Doug North shot a 36-hole total of 167 to lead the Spartans. Scott Van Ahn carded a 176 for 36 holes while Jake Boyd had a 202. The team was missing Jack Bissell and Jon Peasley from the meet. Indian Hills won the meet, with their maroon team shooting a 584. Up next for the Southwestern golf team is a meet Tuesday at Brooks Golf Club in Okoboji. The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
