Spartan softball swept on weekend road trip
The Southwestern softball team outhit (32-29) and had less errors (12-7) than their opponents in four games this weekend, but failed to pick up a win. On road trips to Iowa Falls and Mason City, the Spartans were swept by Ellsworth and NIACC. “The runners were in scoring position and we just can’t get them around the bases right now,” said Southwestern coach Lindsay Stumpff. “Our big hitters aren’t producing like they need to right now. They’re in the spots for that reason and they’re not hitting.” Against Ellsworth on Saturday, the Spartans were swept by scores of 7-4 and 4-3. In the game one loss, Southwestern stranded 15 runners on base. In the game two loss, Ellsworth scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to come away with the victory. In the two losses, Tiffany Troutwine led the Spartans by going 5-of-7 from the plate with four doubles and four RBIs. Against Ellsworth on Sunday, the Spartans lost 4-3 and 7-4. In the game one loss, Ashtyn Neill allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out three. Neill was also 2-for-3 from the plate, but Southwestern couldn’t take advantage of four NIACC errors. In game two, the Spartans threw three pitchers at NIACC in the loss. Cortni Livengood had her second start of the season and took the loss.
