“Blue Jackets” rewarded for their green thumbs

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA - “Blue Jackets, Bright Futures” was the theme for the 2008 Iowa FFA Leadership Conference. The Creston FFA chapter is the recipient of a $$1,249 Environment First grant awarded by Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Donovan Richardson accepted the award from Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Lang. The chapter was one of 35 from across the state that received a total of $50,000 in funding from IFBF to support activities and programs that improve environmental quality in their communities. Since the program began in 2002, Farm Bureau has awarded nearly 340 grants, totaling more than $460,000. The program is sponsored by the IFBF in conjunction with the Iowa FFA Association. “These chapters have made a commitment to protect the environment within their local communities,” said Lang. “Preserving the environment starts with small initiatives within our communities and it’s great to see our youth take an active role in those initiatives.” FFA chapters were able to apply for up to $2,000 in funding for activities to be conducted this calendar year. Chapters were encouraged to conduct projects that analyze water quality protection and odor mitigation, two high-priority issues with evolving solutions.
