MARSHALLTOWN — Southwestern stopped an eight-game slide Tuesday by earning a split with Marshalltown. The Spartan softball team came away with a 13-3 victory over the Tigers in game one. Down 2-0, Southwestern scored nine runs in the fourth inning by way of seven hits and 14 total at-bats. “We finally erupted,” said Southwestern coach Lindsay Stumpff. “We were due for some hits and we finally had some. They had that roadblock for so long and they just went crazy.” The Spartans backed it up with five more runs in the fourth inning. Kaylee Harris led the team by going 3-for-4 while Cortni Livengood, Brittney Auten and Erin Newbury added two hits each. But Southwestern didn’t back it up in game two, falling 10-3 to the Tigers. The Spartans had just seven hits in game two, with Ashtyn Neill going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Southwestern (12-30, 3-23 ICCAC) travels to Iowa Lakes today.
