Spartans swept by Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE — The bats remained silent Wednesday for the Southwestern softball team as Iowa Lakes swept doubleheader action, 6-0 and 6-1. The Lakers outhit Southwestern 28-9 in the doubleheader, a common theme as of late for Spartan coach Lindsay Stumpff. “It’s been the story of the last couple of weeks,” said Stumpff. “We’ve gotten runners on with one out or less and can’t get them around.” The Lakers scored right away in the bottom of the first inning of game one with an RBI single by Kristina Manser. Back-to-back singles in the third inning helped Iowa Lakes score another run, before scoring two more in the fourth and fifth innings. Southwestern had just three baserunners the entire game, with both hits coming in the seventh inning. In game two, the Spartans lost a 6-1 contest. Camiel Salcedo had a two-run home run in the third inning for Iowa Lakes and took a 3-0 lead after that inning. That was more than enough support for the Lakers. Southwestern scored its lone run in the fifth inning when Brittney Auten drove in Erin Newbury. Auten was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. The Spartans (12-32, 3-25 ICCAC) are off until Friday and Saturday when they play in the Central Iowa Tournament in Des Moines. Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
