Spartan softball goes 1-2 in tournament
ALTOONA — Southwestern’s softball team went 1-2 in action Friday and Saturday at the Central Iowa Tournament played at the Greater Des Moines Softball Complex.
The Spartans opened up the tournament with a 4-0 win over Simpson’s JV Friday night, before losing to Iowa Lakes and Western Nebraska on Saturday. Tiffany Troutwine led the Spartans in weekend play, going 7-of-9 from the plate with five doubles and two RBIs.
“Tiffany had a real good weekend,” said Southwestern coach Lindsay Stumpff. “She was hard to keep off the bases for opposing teams.”
Opening the tournament against the Storm, Troutwine led the team by going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the 4-0 win — gaining revenge from losing a doubleheader to Simpson’s JV earlier this season. Ashtyn Neill picked up the win by allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
“It was real windy — that was the worst part,” said Stumpff. “We did a lot of sacrifice bunting because it was cold too. It was probably the coldest game I’ve ever been involved in.”
On Saturday, the weather improved for the Spartans, but the softball reverted back to old ways. Southwestern had 18 hits in two games, but lost 10-2 to Iowa Lakes and 10-1 to No. 20 Western Nebraska.
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Iowa Lakes scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning and Southwestern never recovered. Troutwine, Brittney Auten and Erin Newbury each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the losing effort.
Against Western Nebraska, Stumpff said it didn’t go right from the start against the Cougars — a Division I school.
“They hit the ball really well,” said Stumpff. “They were the visiting team and their leadoff hit a home run right away. That set the tone right away.”
Western Nebraska went on to score five runs in the first inning and took a 7-0 lead after the second inning. The Spartans scored their lone run in the fifth inning.
Southwestern (13-34 overall) hosts its home finale Tuesday when they host William Penn’s JV. Game time is 3 p.m.
