Softball season comes to close for SWCC

FORT DODGE — Southwestern ended its season Friday in the double elimination ICCAC Softball Tournament with losses to second-ranked Muscatine and Marshalltown. Against No. 2 Muscatine, the Spartans lost 10-2 in five innings. Muscatine pitcher Katie Watkinson struck out eight Southwestern batters in the win. “We knew it was going to be tough — they’re the No. 1 seed and second in the nation,” said Southwestern softball coach Lindsay Stumpff. “We had a few girls with at least one hit, but we left runners stranded on base, which has been the theme of this season.” Erin Newbury had a solo home run to leadoff the fourth inning for Southwestern while Tiffany Troutwine and Cortni Livengood each had doubles in the losing effort. In the elimination game against Marshalltown, the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the seventh to put away a 6-3 win. “It was a game going into the top of the seventh and we didn’t finish,” said Stumpff. “Brooke Ellis had a three-run home run with one out and that took the air out of us a little bit.” Troutwine led the Spartans by going 4-for-4 at the plate while Newbury was 2-for-3. Ashtyn Neill took the loss after allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six. Over the weekend, the ICCAC also decided their all-region teams, with Southwestern collecting five honors. Center fielder Brittney Auten was named first-team all-region after going .321 from the plate this season. Angie Hawkins was a second-team selection at catcher for the Spartans while Tiffany Troutwine, Kaylee Harris and Ashtyn Neill were also honorable mention picks. Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
