Spartan golf ends season

FORT DODGE — After tying for ninth through day one of the Region XI Tournament at the Fort Dodge Country Club, the Southwestern golf team took a step backward on the final day of the season. After shooting a team score of 343 on day one, the Spartans carded a 367 to place 10th with a team score of 710. Kirkwood won the meet with a score of 593 for two days. Doug North and Scott Van Ahn each carded two-day scores of 170 while Jack Bissell had a 181. Jon Peasley was the other counting golfer with a 189. “Van Ahn was pretty steady both days,” said Southwestern golf coach Ron “Fox” Clinton. “We put a little pressure on ourselves. It was a step up for us and you get a little tight sometimes.” The top five individuals and top team qualify for the NJCAA Division II Championships May 20-23 at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
