Small School West goes 1-3 in All-Star Series

DES MOINES — The Small School West team went 1-3 in games played Thursday through Sunday at the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series. On Thursday at West Des Moines Dowling Catholic High School, the Large School West rallied for a 10-9 victory over the Small School West. Creston’s Kalab Evans started at catcher and drove in an RBI in the losing effort. In Friday’s game at Principal Park in Des Moines, the Large School East took a 7-4 victory. Dannie Strable of Interstate 35 took the pitching loss after four innings of work. Strable allowed nine hits and three walks while striking out two. Lenox’s Seth Robinson was 1-for-4 with an RBI. On Saturday at Principal Park, the Small School West won 11-5 over the Small School East. But on the very next day in the consolation final at Dowling, the Small School East gained revenge with a 6-3 victory over the Small School West. Robinson took the loss on the mound for the Small School West after allowing six hits and three walks while striking out one in three innings of work. Robinson was 2-for-4 in the game. DES MOINES — On a fourth-quarter buzzer-beater, the Exira Vikettes defeated Mount Ayr in the Class 1A state championship game March 5 at Wells Fargo Arena. Among those attending the game was Peggy Whitson, NASA chief of astronauts and a Mount Ayr graduate.
