Southwest Iowa Fishing Report

Fogle Lake (Ringgold): Largemouth bass can be caught from structure. A few channel catfish are being picked up in shallow water in the evening or after dark. Lake of Three Fires (Taylor): Bluegills can still be caught from the fish mounds or structure. Several largemouth bass can be caught from structure or the edges of the lotus beds. Channel catfish can be caught in less than 6 feet of water in the evenings or after dark. Icaria (Adams): Channel catfish are biting in the shallow bays on cut bait. Bullheads are biting well on night crawlers. Three Mile Lake (Union): Water clarity is about three feet at the dam. Largemouth bass are being caught from structure or flooded timber. Anglers are catching a few walleyes using leeches on the earth mounds at the far north end of the lake. Bluegills are biting on night crawlers just off shore on the edges of the earth mounds. Some crappies can be caught from the flooded timber at mid lake. Twelve Mile Lake (Union): A few nice bluegills are being caught from the edges of the rock mounds on night crawlers. Several mid-sized largemouth bass are being caught from the rock structure or flooded timber. Water clarity is at about 3 feet near the dam. Green Valley (Union): The water level is drained down to 12 feet and will be held there through the fall and winter. Boating access is possible using the main ramp but not encouraged. Extreme care must be used during launching and loading. Water clarity is about two feet. A lot of channel catfish are being caught from the accessible areas of shoreline or the face of the dam on cut bait or stink bait. Walnut Creek Marsh (Ringgold): Anglers are catching some nice bluegills and crappies from the edges of the lotus beds. Contact Gary Sobotka at (641) 464-3108 for information on the above area lakes. Anderson Area (Montgomery): Bluegills are slow but a few are being caught using night crawlers. Hacklebarney (Montgomery): Catfish fishing is fair along the dam using worms and crayfish. Viking Lake (Montgomery): Viking Lake was renovated in the fall of 2006. The lake refilled and restocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, red ear sunfish and channel catfish in the spring of 2007. Anglers can expect to catch largemouth bass up to 15 inches, bluegills six to seven inches, and catfish 14 to 16 inches. Expect fish to grow rapidly in this newly renovated lake. Meadow Lake (Adair): Meadow is open to fishing, however the lake has been lowered 8 feet and the boat ramp is not usable. Habitat improvements are scheduled for this fall and winter. Orient (Adair): Catfish are fair on liver. Greenfield (Adair): Bass fishing is fair using plastic baits around cedar tree piles. Bluegills are fair drifting small jigs and around jetties. A few catfish are being caught on liver. Lake Anita (Cass): Crappie fishing is good for seven to eight-inch fish drifting a small jig or anchored near structure. Crappies have been in six to eight feet of water. Catfish are fair using stink bait below middle silt pond. Bluegills have slowed but a few are being caught while drifting. Bass fishing is fair using plastic baits around rocks and along the road bed during the day. Farm Ponds: Anglers are catching bass and bluegills at some of the local ponds. The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
