MS football Creston/O-M middle school football starts Wednesday, Aug. 20, after school. Any athlete in seventh and eighth grades interested in participating in football should meet in the middle school gym at 3:15 p.m. No athlete will be able to practice until presenting updated physical and insurance forms. Eighth-grade players will get their pads on Wednesday, and the seventh-graders check out their equipment on Thursday. Cookout The annual Football Kickoff Cookout at Crestmoor Golf Club will be held Aug. 23. Social hour begins at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m., followed by an auction, raffle and entertainment. Tickets are $10 each and available at Iowa State Savings Bank, First National Bank, Family Shoe Store and Precision Optical. The fundraising event for Creston/Orient-Macksburg football is designed for parents of Panther players and other football fans. Booster drive Creston Activities Booster Club plans a public membership drive with students in all activities canvassing the community from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. The activity is being conducted to boost the public membership and ease some of the pressure on local businesses, according to Stacy Wood, booster club co-president. Single memberships are $15 each, couples membership is $25 and special packages are available combined with activity tickets. Parents Night Parents Activity Night for Creston is Aug. 21. All parents of students involved in Creston High School activities are encouraged to attend, and sign in at the information table when arriving. “If you are not able to attend, please stop by the high school to meet the administration and pick up information forms on parent, athlete and coaches expectations,” said Jeff Bevins, Creston activities director. Featured speaker will be Creston High School graduate Aaron Richardson, an emergency medical technician who will speak on the current teenage trend of prescription drug abuse. Activity tickets will be sold and Creston Activities Booster club members will sell clothing apparel and provide membership information. Admission to the athletic events listed below is one towel per family. Due to an earlier start to the football season this year in the expanded playoff format, the Creston/O-M scrimmage will take place at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21. However, the annual cross country run and volleyball scrimmage with Orient-Macksburg will be held Aug. 28. Mustang night MURRAY — Mustang Pride and Sportsmanship Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25. The Athletic Booster Club will host a cookout at 5 p.m. in the circle drive in front of te school. The Clarke County Cattlemen will do the grilling. Featured speaker will be Bud Legg ofthe Iowa High School Athletic Assocaition. Parents with children in grades 7-12 involved in extracurricular activities need to attend. This includes football, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, cross country, track, baseball and softball. “The athlete and at least one parent need to be present at this meeign to sign off that they attended and understand the importance of “Pride” and “Sportsmanship,” said Jerry Shields, Murray athletic director.

The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
