Vernon LeRoy King, 67, of Afton was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated 3 a.m. Saturday at the Union County Law Enforcement Center. According to a Union County Sheriff’s report, the Union County Law Center received a call 2 a.m. Saturday about a man walking down Palomino Avenue north of Afton. Upon discovering King, he informed the sheriff he had driven his vehicle into a ditch. While speaking with King, he showed many signs of intoxication. King was then transported to the Union County Law Enforcement Center where breathalyzer testing determined his blood alcohol content to be .138. King was released from the Union County Jail on $2,000 bond. —————— Josh James Briner, 20, of Tingley was charged 11:30 p.m. Saturday on a Union County warrant for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. According to a Union County Sheriff’s report on July 10, officers were dispatched to an injury accident on Pierce Street Extension in Afton. Upon arrival Briner was determined to be the driver of the vehicle involved. While officers were talking to Briner, he showed multiple signs of intoxication. Briner then admitted to drinking. He was transported to Greater Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries. Briner consented to sobriety testing while at Greater Regional Medical Center. A lab technician took a sample of Briner’s blood, which was sent to DCI to be tested for alcohol. Results of the blood test reported Briner’s blood alchol content to be .163. Briner was released from the Union County Jail on $1,000 bond. —————— Susan Mary Dobyns, 47, of Ankeny, was arrested 4:08 p.m. Monday in Creston on a Union County warrant for failure to appear on the original charge of unlawful pssession of a prescription drug. Dobyns is being held in the Union County Jail on $1,200 bond.

The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
