The loss left Creston/O-M eighth in District 8 at 0-7, with a 1-8 overall record for the first time since 1983. Clarke also finished at 1-8 overall, and took seventh place in the district at 1-6. Glenwood finished fifth with a 20-6 win over Winterset, Atlantic took third by edging ADM 21-20, and Harlan claimed the championship by defeating Lewis Central 35-14. Clarke took its first lead of the season since leading Mount Ayr 7-0 in the first game of the season (a 37-7 Mount Ayr win) by getting in front Friday night 7-0 when Valentin Torres took a pass over the middle from Joe Lampe for a 66-yard touchdown with 4:41 left in the first quarter. Clarke got the ball on their own 34 after the first of two interceptions by Caleb Coale. The Indians’ second scoring drive of the first half covered 78 yards in 17 plays, culminating in Keegan Brimm’s 1-yard run with 5:26 left in the second quarter. After a Panther penalty on the extra point, Clarke failed on a run for two points, leaving the score 13-0. The Panthers answered with their only scoring drive, starting on their own 43. Freshman quarterback Alan Smith connected with Tony Cruz for a 35-yard pickup on a short pass, Brody Jay ran for a first down and Seth Pals had a 15-yard reception from Smith to get to the Indian 13-yard line. After a short run and two incompletions, Kevin Irr kicked a 28-yard field goal with 2:09 left in the half. That would turn out to be the game’s final scoring play. Creston/O-M was hampered by mistakes, earning 78 yards in rushing gains, but 62 in losses including three center snaps over the quarterback’s head for losses of 18, 19 and 17 yards. That left the Panthers with 16 net yards rushing. Jay carried eight times for 41 yards as the highlight of the Panther running attack. In his first varsity appearance, Smith was 20-of-41 for 211 yards and two interceptions. Five different Panthers caught four passes each, led by Pals with 71 yards on his four receptions. Cruz, Jay, Irr and Spencer Bakerink also had four catches each. Clarke outgained Creston/O-M in total yards 267 to 227, and the Indians amassed 190 of those yards on the ground in 54 rushing attempts, with only four passes for 77 yards. Ryan Harmsen carried 19 times for 107 yards for the Indians, who had scored just a total of 27 points all season prior to Friday’s contest. Creston/O-M was outscored this season 349-116, for an average score of 39-13. It was just the third Panther sub-.500 season since 1985. The past two Clarke wins were at home, in 2006 against Davis County and 2003 against Saydel. The Clarke coaching staff estimated the last road victory was prior to 2000. ————— Lenox 22, East Union 12 LENOX — Lenox built an early advantage and held on for a 22-12 victory over previously unbeaten East Union Friday night in the Eight-Man District 6 finale. The Tigers struck first with a 34-yard touchdown run by Tyler Peterson, followed by a Peterson two-point conversion run, to give Lenox an 8-0 lead. Peterson ran in the second touchdown of the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead after Branden Cline found Caleb Sorensen on the two-point pass. But East Union responded, needing just two plays to break into the scoring column. Alex Pettit found Jon Gilliam on second down for a 51-yard touchdown pass to make it 16-6 after the two-point conversion failed late in the first quarter That score held up until midway through the third quarter. East Union took advantage of a roughing the kicker penalty on a Pettit field goal attempt, and Craig Ditzler stuffed it into the end zone on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line for the touchdown. The extra point failed, so Lenox’s lead was cut to 16-12. Lenox responded to put the game away with a 7-play drive, capping it off with a 33-yard run by Peterson with 6:14 remaining in the game. The Tigers had two more chances late in the game to reach the 12-point plateau the team needed to become the district champion. With only a 10-point win, Lamoni wins the district title, Lenox finishes second and East Union ends up third. ————— Other western and south central Iowa scores reported Friday night: PREP FOOTBALL Anita CAM 24, Adair-Casey 22 Atlantic 21, Adel ADM 20 Avoca AHST 38, Tabor Fremont-Mills 0 Bedford 12, Treynor 0 Boone 28, Huxley Ballard 9 CAM 24, Adair-Casey 22 Carroll 46, Nevada 14 Centerville 28, Chariton 7 Clarinda 23, Red Oak 0 Coon Rapids-Bayard 46, Walnut 14 Corning 36, Mondamin West Harrison 0 Council Bluffs St. Albert 35, Logan-Magnolia 0 Dallas Center-Grimes 49, Saydel 0 Des Moines Grandview Park Baptist 50, Garden Grove Mormon Trail 24 Earlham 63, Martensdale-St. Marys 0 East Mill 56, Hamburg 36 Farragut 74, Essex 38 Glenwood 20, Winterset 6 Glidden-Ralston 38, Exira 32 Grand Junction East Greene 64, Elk Horn-Kimballton 36 Greenfield Nodaway Valley 28, Truro Interstate 35 8 Grinnell 38, Carlisle 28 Griswold 62, Oakland Riverside 7 Guthrie Center 36, Stuart West Central Valley 7 Harlan 35, Council Bluffs Lewis Central 14 IKM/Manning 61, Shenandoah 0 Jefferson JSPC 14, Perry 12 Knoxville 15, Tama South Tama 12 Lamoni 54, Murray 14 Lenox 22, Afton East Union 12 Madrid 51, Liberty Center SE Warren 26 Melcher-Dallas 60, Bussey Twin Cedars 54 Missouri Valley 35, Maple Valley/Anthon/Oto 12 O-A/BCIG 37, Carroll Kuemper 22 Onawa West Monona 22, Neola Tri-Center 21 Osceola Clarke 13, Creston-Orient-Macksburg 3 Pella Christian 2, Corydon Wayne 0 Pella 31, Norwalk 3 Pleasantville 35, Des Moines Christian 18 Sioux City Heelan 35, Sergeant Bluff-Luton 7 Spencer 26, Denison-Schleswig 3 Stanton 76, College Springs South Page 6 Thornburg Tri-County 65, Moravia 8 Underwood 45, Clarinda Academy 28 Van Meter 42, Lynnville-Sully 12 Villisca 19, Sidney 13 Woodward-Granger 42, Audubon 0
