Union County voters make their mark in election 2008

Democrat Sen. Barack Obama has beat Republican Sen. John McCain in Union County with 2,990 to McCain's 2,774. Sen. Tom Harkin beat Christopher Reed in Union County with 3,449 votes to Reed's 2,328. Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Steve King took the lead early finishing the Union County vote with 3,067 votes to 2,430 votes for his Democratic rival Rob Hubler. In the 48th District Iowa Senate, Republican Kim Reynolds won the Union County vote with 2,833 votes to Democrt Ruth Smith's 2,646 votes and Independent Rodney Schmidt with 216. Iowa 95th District Rep. Mike Reasoner, D-Creston, took the lead in Union County with 3,199 vote over 2,137 votes for Republican Doug Smith of Osceola. In the race for the Union County District 3 supervisor seat, Robert J. Jansen won with 2,134 votes over challengers Gary O'Daniels with 1,833 votes and Dennis Hance with 1,675 votes. These are preliminary counts, with absentee ballots still to be counted that are postmarked Nov. 4.

The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
