Volleyball event Creston High School’s volleyball awards banquet will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 in the high school commons. Each player’s family is asked to bring a covered dish, dessert and place settings. Beverages are furnished. Bowl bound FORT DODGE — Several players from southwest Iowa are members of the Iowa Central Community College football team that has advanced to a bowl game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The Tritons, 7-3 with a 6-3 conference record, defeated Ellsworth in the playoffs to advance to the Graphic Edge Bowl 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in the UNI-Dome against Dean College of Franklin, Mass. The Triton squad includes freshman wide receiver Kaleb Bissell of Corning; freshman defensive lineman Shawn Oaks and freshman defensive back Ryan Robins of Murray; freshman outside linebacker Ben Ripperger of Lacona; freshman outside linebacker Nick Amadeo of Osceola; freshman defensive lineman Jordan Schechinger of Harlan; and freshman fullback Ryan Bach of Carroll. Starter INDIANOLA — Sophomore Caleb Brus of Creston emerged as a starter last season for Simpson College’s wrestling team, and is listed as the varsity 141-pounder as the 2008-09 campaign begins Saturday at the Knox Invitational in Galesburg, Ill. Brus was second on the team in victories last season with 22 (22-16), placing sixth in the Iowa Conference Tournament. “Caleb is a very dedicated student of the sport and is willing to do whatever it takes to get better every day,” said Simpson coach Clint Manny, who is assisted by former Creston/O-M assistant Drew Duff. “His level of commitment both during the off-season and in-season has been phenomenal. Caleb took his lumps early last year, but really came on late last year as a freshman. I look for him to make some serious noise at both the conference and national level this year.” Duff is working with former Martensdale-St. Marys wrestler John Bunch at the heavyweight position. Also on the team are former Winterset preps Calvin Barber (149) and Curtis Barber (165). TV times The Purdue at Iowa football game Saturday will begin at 11 a.m.,,. and is televised by the Big Ten Network (Mediacom 59, DirecTV 609, Dish 5440). Missouri plays at Iowa State at 5:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Midwest (Mediacom 40, DirecTV 671, Dish 418). Deer licenses DES MOINES — November antlerless season licenses go on sale Saturday, in the counties that have antlerless licenses remaining. The hunting regulations incorrectly listed the on sale date as Nov. 10. Currently, there are 52 counties primarily in southern and eastern Iowa that have antlerless-only licenses available. For a listing of counties, go to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources website www.iowadnr.gov then click on Licenses in the navigation column on the left, then click on Current Availability of Limited Quota of Deer and Turkey Licenses, then on Resident Antlerless Deer by County. Hunters may purchase as many licenses as they wish until the quota is filled. Licenses are sold on a first come, first serve basis. Turkey licenses Since Nov. 1, resident fall turkey hunters could purchase one additional paid combination gun/bow license in any zone where the quotas have not filled. Zones 4, 5, 6 and 7 have licenses remaining. The McKinley Park Festival kicked off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday July 31 with a kids fishing contest. More than 150 kids participated in the contest. A bike parade ensued at 1 p.m. The parade was judged and two boys and two girls received new bikes. The Bill Riley Talent Show took place at the bandshell at 2 p.m. First-place contestants advanced to perform at the Iowa State Fair. And at 10 p.m., the Creston Shooters delivered an 18-minute fireworks display.
