Wrestlers busy Several former Creston/O-M wrestlers were busy in recent tournaments. Andrew Long, a freshman at Iowa State University, finished second in the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open at 125 pounds Saturday. He lost to No. 1 seeded teammate Tyler Jones in the finals by decision, 9-8. Long was 4-1 on the day and defeated three seeded wrestlers. Caleb Brus, a Simpson College sophomore, placed third in the 141-pound class at the Knox Invitational on Nov. 15 at Galesburg, Ill. Quin Leith, a freshman at Cornell University, went 0-2 Nov. 15 wrestling at 133 pounds in the Binghamton Brute Open. Trent Tucker, a freshman at Coe College, defeated Justin Garcia of UW-La Crosse by a 7-6 decision in the third-place match of the UW - Stevens Point Tournament on Nov. 8. Tucker finished the day with a record of 5-1 at 141 pounds. His only loss came to the eventual champion. Athletic fundraiser Southwestern will hold its annual dinner/auction fundraiser Friday, Nov. 21 at the Creston Elks Lodge. Tickets for this event will cost $25, which includes free refreshments, hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner. Tickets may be purchased at the Creston Elks Lodge, Family Shoe Store and Southwestern Community College. Reservations can also be made by calling Bill Krejci at 641-782-1459 or Tracey Evans at 641-782-1437. All proceeds from this event will support the Southwestern Athletic Scholarship Fund. Volleyball banquet Creston High School’s volleyball awards banquet will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 in the high school commons. Each player’s family is asked to bring a covered dish, dessert and place settings. Beverages are furnished. Boys basketball A free basketball program for boys in grades 3-6 on Saturdays has begun at Creston Middle School and Elementary School gyms. Time periods are 8:30 to 10 a.m. for boys in third and fourth grades; and 10 to 11:30 a.m. for boys in fifth and sixth grades. After Saturday’s introduction session, the program continues on Nov. 22, Dec. 6, Dec. 13, Dec. 20, Jan. 3, Jan. 10, Jan. 17, Jan. 24 and Jan. 31. Participants are asked to bring gym shoes, shorts and T-shirt for learning fundamental instruction from high school players and Creston coaches. Girls basketball Creston girls basketball coach Todd Jacobson has announced the youth program for girls in third through eighth grades will begin Nov. 8 at Creston High School. Hours are 9 to 10:15 a.m. for third-fourth grades, 10:30 to noon for fifth-sixth grades, and seventh-eighth grade optional shoot-around from noon to 1 p.m. Instructional clinic days are Nov. 8, 15, 22 and 29, with games on Dec. 6, 13 and 20. “My goal is to continue to establish a slid youth program in the community and give every young lady an opportunity to grow and learn as a basketball player,” Jacobson said. “Every young lady will be able to play the game and have an opportunity to participate on a traveling ream if they choose. There will not be a “select” team and players will not be excluded from playing.” Parents interested in coaching any youth team for tournaments should attend a coaches meeting at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 8. Handouts will be distributed for tournament participation. Fees for the program vary according to packages selected by each player. Options are $20 for camp T-shirt only; $30 for camp T-shirt and a black/red reversible jersey; $50 for camp T-shirt and a large Creston gym bag; and $60 for a camp T-shirt, reversible jersey and Creston gym bag. Express wrestling Practices for the Express Wrestling Club will begin the week of Dec. 1 at Burton R. Jones gym, at the south entrance. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten meets Mondays from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.; first and second grades on Mondays 6:45-7:30 p.m. and Fridays 5:45-6:30 p.m.; and third grade and above on Wednesdays 5:45-6:45 p.m. and Fridays 6:45-7:45 p.m. Cost is $25 for pre-K and kindergarten; and $35 for first grade and above.
