Hawks roll IOWA CITY (AP) — Freshman Anthony Tucker scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds as Iowa pounded Southeast Missouri State 75-41 on Tuesday night and improved to 5-0. Matt Gatens added 12 points for the Hawkeyes, who led by double digits for the final 34 minutes en route to their most lopsided win of the season. Southeast Missouri State got as close as 13 early in the second half. But Tucker hit a 3 well beyond the line to cap a 19-6 run and put the Hawkeyes back ahead 54-28 with 9:44 left. Calvin Williams had 10 points to lead Southeast Missouri State (1-3). Staying perfect MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — MiQuale Lewis ran for three touchdowns and set a school single-season record, Nate Davis threw for one score and ran for another and even the defense got into the end zone as No. 15 Ball State rolled to a 45-22 victory over Western Michigan, clinching a perfect regular season and a spot in the Mid-American Conference championship game. “Everybody’s dream is to go undefeated,” Davis said after throwing for 273 yards and running for 64. A program that won only six games in coach Brady Hoke’s first two seasons is now one of four remaining unbeaten teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Cardinals’ milestone victory clinched a second straight bowl bid for the first time in school history. Maui hoops LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Luke Harangody had 29 points and 13 rebounds and No. 8 Notre Dame hung on to beat No. 6 Texas 81-80 on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Harangody, the Big East player of the year last season as a sophomore, was his usual force inside in a game that saw both teams combine for 49 3-point attempts. Notre Dame won that battle as well, hitting 11 from beyond the arc while the Longhorns made eight. It wasn’t all great for Harangody, however, as he missed two free throws with 3.5 seconds left and the Fighting Irish leading 81-80. A.J. Abrams, Texas’ top 3-point shooter, got off a shot from just before halfcourt but it bounced off the rim. This was the first matchup of Top Ten teams this season and there will be another Wednesday night as the Fighting Irish (4-0) advanced to the championship game against No. 1 North Carolina. Oregon will play the Longhorns (3-1) for third place. Tyler Hansbrough, who missed three weeks of practice and three games with a leg injury, had 16 points to lead the Tar Heels to a victory over Oregon in the semifinals. COLLEGE BASKETBALL INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Fearing a postseason ban, Indiana University accepted an NCAA-ordered three years’ probation, eager to continue rebuilding its once-storied men’s basketball program. After months of uncertainty over an embarrassing telephone recruiting scandal, the NCAA spared the school any additional punishment such as a postseason ban or additional scholarship losses. But former coach Kelvin Sampson, the man at the center of the scandal, faces recruiting restrictions through November 2013 if hired by another school. The announcement ended a 20-month saga that began with Sampson’s hiring in March 2006. Infractions committee chairwoman Jo Potuto acknowledged Indiana was spared additional punishment because of its cooperation with the investigation, its own decision to take away a scholarship and extend recruiting restrictions and the school’s long tradition of abiding by the rules. COLLEGE FOOTBALL STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State coach Joe Paterno was released from the hospital, two days after undergoing hip replacement surgery. The 81-year-old coach had surgery to fix a sore hip that prevented him from pacing the sidelines. He coached the final seven games of the regular season from the press box. Paterno was released early from Mount Nittany Medical Center, the school said in a statement. The team doctor called the surgery a success. The surgery took place Sunday, the day after No. 6 Penn State (11-1, 7-1 Big Ten) beat Michigan State to win the conference title and a trip to the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. Paterno was expected to resume coaching duties on Monday, when players return from Thanksgiving break. It’s unclear whether Paterno will be healthy enough to return to the sideline for the Rose Bowl, though he has vowed to remain active in bowl preparations. BASEBALL NEW YORK (AP) — Roger Clemens’ former trainer gave samples of his DNA to federal investigators trying to ascertain whether the star pitcher committed perjury before Congress, two New York newspapers reported. The request for a DNA sample from trainer Brian McNamee suggests that investigators found readable DNA on the syringes, needles and gauze pads McNamee turned over to federal prosecutors in January, The New York Times and Daily News reported. McNamee’s lawyers have said the items, when tested, would link Clemens to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. They claim McNamee used those needles and a gauze pad while injecting Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone. Investigators must determine whose DNA is on that material if it is going to be important to the probe. It’s not clear whether federal authorities have a sample of DNA from Clemens. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has had arthroscopic hip surgery and is expected to need four to six months to recover. The three-time All Star had surgery to trim the labrum and a bony lesion in his right hip at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, team officials said. Despite feeling symptoms for much of the year, Utley hit .292 and led all second basemen with 33 home runs and 104 RBIs as the Phillies won the National League East for the second consecutive year. In the playoffs, he hit three home runs with nine RBIs the help the Phillies win their second World Series and first since 1980. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said last week he expects Utley to be ready at or shortly after the start of the 2009 regular season. Spring training begins Feb. 14. Philadelphia’s first regular-season game is April 5. PRO FOOTBALL CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns quarterback Brady Quinn will miss the remainder of Cleveland’s season with a broken right index finger he made worse by playing on Sunday, according to several reports. Citing unnamed sources, FOXsports.com and the Cleveland Plain Dealer said the break on Quinn’s finger worsened after he tried to play through the injury in a loss to the Houston Texans. Quinn initially broke the tip of the finger and damaged a tendon in his second career start on Nov. 17 at Buffalo. Quinn flew to Birmingham, Ala., to have the injury examined by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. The second-year QB was then advised by Andrews as well as specialists brought in by the Browns to end his season with five games left before the tendon tore from the bone. PRO BASKETBALL NEW YORK (AP) — The trade that sent Zach Randolph from New York to the Los Angeles Clippers was completed, though Cuttino Mobley still wasn’t available to play for the Knicks. The deal was made Friday but was hung up when the Knicks reportedly learned of a heart condition during Mobley’s physical. Randolph was prevented from playing Monday night for the Clippers because of the delay. New York waived the physical requirement so the deal could be finalized. Knicks president Donnie Walsh wouldn’t reveal the nature of Mobley’s medical condition, but said Mobley wouldn’t be available for Tuesday’s game against Cleveland or Wednesday night in Detroit while he underwent additional testing. Tim Thomas, acquired along with Mobley, was in uniform for New York on Tuesday night against Cleveland.

Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
