Several activities are planned to kick off the Christmas holiday season in Creston this Thursday through Saturday. The Quilt Block Walk throughout uptown Creston and Comfort and Joy Quilt Show at American Home Design Center, 101 N. Walnut St., start at 10 a.m. Thursday and run through Saturday. “The quilt blocks will be available in 16 uptown stores,” said Quilts and Other Notions owner Joyce Franklin. “Last year, there were more than 100 quilts and quilted items on display. Some old and some new. The quilt for the raffle to benefit Rural Iowa Crisis Center will be on display and raffle tickets are available. There will also be door prizes.” The sample quilt from this year’s quilt block walk is on display at Knits and Other Notions, 209 W. Montgomery St., for anyone wanting to see what the finished quilt will look like, and kits are available to make a quilt exactly like the sample. “Barb Hudson and I put the quilt together this year,” said Franklin. “It’s certainly a good time to come and explore uptown Creston.” The quilt show is sponsored by American Home Design Center, Knits and Other Notions and Patches and Pieces Quilt Guild. New addition “A fun-filled four days of activities is scheduled,” said Creston Chamber of Commerce Director Ellen Gerharz. “There’s one new addition to the weekend — the YMCA wine and cheese fundraiser at Three Mile Lake Lodge Saturday evening.” Tradition As part of living window displays, dancers in the snow globe at Leslie’s Dance Emporium, 218 N. Pine St., will again be featured with other live displays at Rod’s Hallmark, 212 N. Maple St., Coen’s Furniture, 121 N. Maple St. and Maurice’s, 115 N. Maple St., from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be lots of activity at the restored Creston Depot with the arrival of Santa at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friends of the Creston Library sponsoring pictures with Santa for a fee. The Creston Chamber of Commerce and Friends will be serving hot cider and donut holes. There will be a Rotary soup supper from 4 to 7 p.m. in the congregate meal site and the model trains will be running. Once again this year, after the lighted Christmas Parade there will be a fireworks display and Iowa State Savings Bank Holiday Open House. Festival of Trees will again be on display at Maple Street Memories, 222 N. Maple St., from Thursday to Dec. 7 with proceeds of the silent tree auction going toward Southern Iowa Resources for Families. “Connie Hardin works so hard on the Festival of Trees all year long behind the scenes,” said Maple Street Memories co-owner Barb Coenen. “She is really an asset to SIRF and is the whole driving force behind this fundraiser for them. She does a beautiful job on the trees, and I hope many people have a chance to see them!” ____________ Valarie Allen can be reached at 782-2141, ext. 233 or vallen@crestonnews.com

Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
