ACS management shifts for 25th season

CORNING — A cornerstone track of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will celebrate its silver anniversary of NASCAR sanctioning with a shift in management in 2009. Adams County Speedway, a half-mile black clay oval in Corning, will be operated by the Adams County Fair and Racing Association (ACFRA) and promoted by KMA Regional Radio. The ACFRA has installed Ray Houck as track manager and entered into a promotional partnership with KMA Regional Radio. The Shenandoah AM and FM radio stations cover southwest Iowa, northwest Missouri and portions of Nebraska. Nick Wetzel is KMA’s point person in promoting Adams County Speedway. “Adams County Speedway has always been an important member of the NASCAR racing family, and we can’t thank the Hampels enough for their support and dedication to short-track racing throughout the years,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. “We are looking forward to continuing our great relationship with Adams County through the Adams County Fair and Racing Association and their partnership with KMA Regional Radio.” The transfer of responsibilities follows the retirement of long-time track operators Gail Hampel and his wife, Karen. Their son, Greg Hampel, will serve as an administrative consultant to assure continuity in the transition. The Hampels began promoting the track in 1983 and brought the NASCAR sanction to the facility in 1984. “We’re excited to stay with NASCAR in 2009,” said ACFRA President Clifford Baldwin. “Adams County Speedway has enjoyed great success thanks to the Hampels, and we’re looking forward to building on that.” “We’re unique among race tracks because Adams County Fair and Racing Association is a 501 3C non-profit group. Our profit goes directly back into the facility. We also have an approved 50-50 drawing that generates up to $6,000 a year for local student scholarships.” KMA’s Wetzel, a longtime Corning resident, recognizes the importance of the track within the community. “Adams County Speedway means so much for so many people in our area,” Wetzel said. “We’re excited about the partnership between KMA Regional Radio and the speedway. We want Saturday nights at the track to be a great new entertainment experience. Hampel received recognition for his years of successful race promotion at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet in Las Vegas in November. NASCAR Vice President for Corporate Communications Jim Hunter presented Hampel with a special service award during the ceremonies. “That was very nice of NASCAR to do and it was a big surprise,” Hampel said. “We’ve always supported NASCAR, and we’ve enjoyed a great relationship.” The track opens in 2009 with a practice night and free admission on April 18.
