
Area Boys BasketballDiagonal 72, Lineville-Clio 36 LINEVILLE — Diagonal snapped a three-game losing streak Monday with a 72-36 victory over Lineville-Clio. “After a couple of tough losses, it was good to see the boys having some fun on the court as we were able to get everyone a lot of playing time,” Diagonal coach Larry Teply said. The Maroons (4-5 overall) took a 16-2 lead midway through the first quarter and built on that advantage. Diagonal had a season-high 20 steals, seven by Michael Bentley, in the win. “Ryan England had an excellent all-around night,” Teply said. England scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out six assists, had six steals and blocked five shots. Lineville-Clio (36) Mount Ayr 73, MSM 53 MARTENSDALE — Mount Ayr jumped out to a 27-9 lead after the first quarter Friday and went on to defeat Martensdale-St Marys 73-53 for the Raiders first Pride of Iowa victory. “We took a big step (Friday) by getting the monkey off our back and getting this win,” Mount Ayr coach Bret Ruggles said. “We now need to focus on turnovers and valuing the basketball.” Mount Ayr (3-4 overall, 1-4 conference) shot 7-of-11 on 3-pointers, including Jordan Larsen hitting three. Mitch Grose scored 14 points for the Raiders and grabbed eight rebounds. Moravia 67, Diagonal 61 MORAVIA — Ryan England had three fouls within the first six minutes of the game and sat for the rest of the first half Friday during Diagonal’s loss to Moravia. The Mohawks held a 40-22 lead at the half and led 52-35 heading into the fourth quarter. England led his team in scoring with 21, despite the foul trouble. The Maroons outscored Moravia 26-15, but came up six points short. “We did an excellent job running our offense in the second half, but ran out of time to complete the comeback,” Diagonal coach Larry Teply said. “Fouls and missed free throw opportunities sums (it) up.” Diagonal shot 16-of-32 from the foul line. “We just need to improve defensively as a team to start picking up some wins,” Teply said. Corning 75, Wayne 43 CORNING — Corning returned home for the first time since Dec. 4 and dominating Wayne picking up a 75-43 Pride of Iowa Conference win Friday. “I thought our kids really got after it defensively,” Corning coach Mark Fisher said. “Even late in the second half as the started to really get spread out, we kept playing hard. We kept battling. We kept getting on the floor for loose balls and that’s the kind of thing you have to do if you want to be a great team. I was proud of the way our guys played.” Corning (6-3 overall, 6-1 conference) was led by Michael Webb’s 22 points. He was one of three Red Raiders to reach double-digit scoring. Corning held Wayne (2-2 conference) to 33 percent shooting from the field. The Eagles led 11-2 six minutes into the game and took a 34-9 lead into the half. The Bulldogs scored 18 points in the first three quarters, but outscored ACA 19-10 in the fourth quarter to close the margin. ACA’s (7-2 overall) top two scorers, Tim Olejniczak and Jason Cameron, combined to score 42 points, five more than the Bulldogs totaled.
