DES MOINES — Creston placed two bowlers in the top 25 of the Class 1A individual rankings, and placed 10th as a team at the 2009 Boys State High School Bowling Tournament.
Carroll Area Schools won the event held by the Iowa High School Bowling Federation with 3,062 pins. (Boys bowling is not a sanctioned sport by the Iowa High School Athletic Association until 2009-10.)
Denison-Schleswig was third at 2,936; Red Oak placed sixth at 2791; and Creston rounded out the 10-team 1A field at Plaza Lanes with 2,574.
Muscatine topped Waukee for the 2A title, 3,215 to 3,106.
“We shot better at state than at the substate,” Creston coach Jon Thomson said. “The competition was really tough. We just had a couple kids get off to a slow start, and a couple of the Baker rounds were tough.”
Freshman Zeke Craig shot two games of 194 to lead the Panthers with a 388 series, good for 18th in the individual rankings. Nathan Namanny of Denison-Schleswig topped the 1A field with a 698 three-game series on games of 218, 235 and 245. The top 10 bowlers each bowled a third game for the final standings.
James Norris of Creston was 25th with a two-game series of 156-213 — 369. Other Panthers were Chris Bird, 46th at 325; Lucas Waltz, 49th at 320; and Cody Gilbert, 50th at 319.
Seniors concluding their careers for the Panthers were Norris and Bird.
