Panthers fall twice at Brett Prange Classic

DES MOINES — Coon-Rapids Bayard and Carlisle rolled over the Creston Panther baseball team Saturday in the Brett Prange Classic held on the campus of Grandview University. Bayard defeated Creston 14-0 in six innings in the opening game and Carlisle beat the Panthers by mercy rule, 18-6, in game two.

“The whole story of the day, and the tournament, was the oppositions hitting,” Creston coach Steve Birchard said. “In the second game, they had six extra base hits. Grandview’s a big park that has a lot of room. Nauman got in some cardiovascular work. We were short staffed too. We couldn’t keep up on the offensive end. And when we were at the plate, our mental approach wasn’t there in the first game.”

The Panthers recorded four hits in the first game. Seth Pals was 1-for-3 with a triple. Travis Kipp was 2-for-2 and Alec Paup was 1-for-2.

“Travis had a rough night at Denison, so it was good to see him get back on track,” Birchard said. “Seth had a good weekend, with a triple in both games. He hit one to left center and another to right center.”

On the hill, Nauman went 3 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs, five hits, five walks and striking out three. Miller went 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing five earned runs, five hits and struck out one.

In game two, the bats woke up for Creston as six different players recorded hits. Ben Landers led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Tyler Coenen was 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBI’s. Pals was 1-for-2 with a triple and Paup was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

On the hill, Collin Bevins went 2 2/3 innings, allowing 12 earned runs on nine hits while yielding five base on balls. Landers went 1 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs. Carlisle recorded 14 hits in the contest.

Creston (6-16, 4-8) returns to action tonight, traveling to Martensdale for JV/Varsity doubleheader.

“Martensdale is a good 1A school. They have beat some good opponents,” Birchard said. “They will be a good test, especially up at their place.”

Starting school on Aug. 23, or earlier, is a good idea.
I agree, it prevents school from lasting too far into June.
I disagree, it is too early, especially if it starts before the end of the Iowa State Fair.
School should be year-round
