Gurung awaits arraignment
Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon has set a tentative arraignment date of Dec. 18 for Anil “Neil” Gurung.
Gurung, 45, was charged with first-degree arson, a Class B felony, and assault of a police officer, a Class D felony, Nov. 10 after allegedly throwing a gas can at Creston police officers who were serving a search warrant at Gurung’s residence, 1005 E. Howard St. The gas was then ignited, starting a fire that caused significant damage to the residence owned by Helen “June” Propst.
Gurung lived with Propst, who was not in the house at the time of the alleged incident, and served as a caretaker.
Creston police officers apprehended Gurung after a brief standoff.
A preliminary hearing Tuesday was waived by Gurung, who is being represented by Steven Addington of the State Public Defender’s Office.
Kenyon has 45 days from the date Gurung was charged to file trial information for district court before an arraignment can be held.
According to Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer, charges pertaining to the search warrant being served to Gurung in connection with an alleged assault are still pending. The Creston Police Department is awaiting test results from the state crime lab.
Gurung is being held in the Union County Jail on $25,000 bond.
