Highland overwhelms Southwestern men, 81-60

HIGHLAND, Kan. — The Southwestern men were slightly overwhelmed by the athleticism and speed of the Highland Community College team Wednesday night in Kansas. Falling 81-60, Southwestern moved to 3-2 this season.

“We played fairly well, but they were big, strong and fast,” said Southwestern head basketball coach Mike Holmes. “Our guys got out rebounded 52-27 because we missed some rotations and were physically outmatched.”

Although the Spartans suffered a poor shooting night, coach Holmes said the offense played with a lot of intensity and worked the ball around well to get good looks.

Sophomore Trent Fisher led the way with 15 points and freshmen Tyler Smith, BJ Bonamy and David Farmer all were in double figures for the Spartans. As a team there were only seven turnovers and Southwestern had a decent night at the free throw line, 18-25.

With the rest of the week to prepare for Monday’s game against Grand View JV, the squad will be focusing on getting defensive stops.

“Our first rotation is great, but when we start getting into long defensive stretches, we will miss just one or two crucial rotations that lead to an easy layup or an offensive rebound,” said Holmes. “We also need to react better on the dribble, not only for the guy defending the ball, but everyone who needs to be in help position as well.”

The game against Grand View JV will the third road game in a row for the Spartans before returning home on Nov. 30 to take on Central JV. Orient-Macksburg graduate Michael West should be present in the Dutch lineup.
