MOUNT AYR — Nodaway Valley’s Travis Jameson set a season high Tuesday evening with 14 points. Most of those points were courtesy of offensive rebounds. The 6-4 senior, with assistance from teammates Chad Varley and Nick Fox, owned the glass against the Mount Ayr Raiders.

The Wolverines grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, handing Mount Ayr a 64-48 setback. With the loss, the Raiders move to 10-7 overall and 7-6 inside the Pride of Iowa Conference.

“Their three big men pounded the ball inside against our smaller front court,” Mount Ayr coach Bret Ruggles said. “We were out rebounded, roughed up and overmanned tonight. We had no answer for their physical play and we were not able to get key defensive rebounds to keep the score within reach.”

Varley, active on the boards while converting several hustle plays, finished with a game-high 19 points. Nodaway Valley, who has four players averaging double figures, finished with three in double digits against Mount Ayr. Varley had 19 points, Fox added 16 and Jameson contributed 14 points.

“That’s (Jameson’s) best game of the year,” Nodaway Valley coach Darrell Burmeister said. “He did a great job in that first half. He had several offensive rebounds. And that carried over in the second half.”

Mount Ayr guard Matt Sobotka was accurate from the perimeter Tuesday, nailing two 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 12 points. He added two rebounds and three steals. Colton Bolles had eight points and six rebounds. Dusty Lyden had two steals that led to seven points.

Nodaway Valley, ranked No. 7 in Western Iowa, moves to 20-3 overall. The Wolverines will face Southeast Warren Friday, a team that upset league leading Bedord last month. Meanwhile, the Raiders host Martensdale Thursday and Pleasantville Friday.

NODAWAY VALLEY (64) — Varley 19, Fox 16, Jameson 14, Steven McFarland 8, Brad Baudler 5, Blake Quam 2.

MOUNT AYR (48) — Colton Bolles 8, David Showalter 3, Christian Overholtzer 2, Matt Sobotka 12, Braydee Poore 3, Korey Beaman 3, Dusty Lyden 7, Jake Still 1, Jake Glendenning 8, Malcom Mercer 5.
