SHENANDOAH — On Saturday the Creston/O-M wrestling team accomplished something no other Class 2A team did — send 12 on to districts.

The day was laced with upsets and intense matches. Creston/O-M took first place with 258.5 points, followed by Harlan with 199. Both teams advance to the Class 2A dual regional Tuesday in Winterset.

“Today went really well,” said Creston/O-M coach Darrell Frain. “If you would have told me that we’d get 12 guys to districts I would have been very happy. We stepped up, had seven champions. It was an exceptional day for us.”

In the 112-pound finals, freshman Jake Johnston provided the Creston/O-M crowd with an incredible comeback. In the last minute of the first period Johnston found himself nearly pinned by Geoff Sellers of Red Oak. Johnston broke Sellers’ hold, got a reversal within the final 30 seconds, and turned Sellers to his back. Johnston ended the match with a pin at 1:38

“I thought I was done,” said Johnston. “I just kind of gave up, but then I knew that I had to come back and stick the kid.”

Big upset

Unbelievable was the word used by coach Frain to describe the 215 championship match between Creston/O-M’s Collin Bevins, and 38-2, second-ranked Marcus Streit of Harlan.  Bevins turned Streit to his back and picked up the pin with 32 seconds remaining in the second period.

“I never stopped wrestling,” said Bevins. “I caught him in a cradle and pinned him. Next weekend I’ve got to worry about finals with him again.”

“He had the number two kid in the state,” said Frain. “We knew Bevins could wrestle with him. Got him down and didn’t let him off of his back and put him away. That was a huge match for him. Collin doesn’t realize that he’s raised the bar for himself.”

Creston/O-M’s two ranked wrestlers, No. 1 Jake Marlin and No. 9 Jared Bevins, went unchallenged and ended all their matches for the day with pins.

In the 130-pound finals Marlin pinned Steven Ripley of Clarinda in 2:16. In the 189 championship match Bevins pinned Jordan Dammann of Clarinda with 22 seconds remaining in the first period.

The other three champions for Creston/O-M were Gage Cheers (103), David Thompson (119), and Cort Sandeman (140).

Cheers got the pin against Sean Skillern of Shenandoah with one second left in the first period to end his championship match. Thompson won with a 4-2 decision over Brodie Bergren of Clarinda. Sandeman faced Nick Card of Clarinda and ended the match in a 5-4 decision.

After four weeks of not competing, senior Brody Jay was able to wrestle back for runner-up. He found himself up against Carroll Heitshusen, who was undefeated and ranked No. 5 coming into the day. Heitshusen had just suffered his first loss of the year in the finals against Taimon Wehr in a 4-1 decision. Jay capitalized on the opportunity and handed Heitshusen his first loss by fall this season

The other runners-up to round out the list of qualifiers were Zac Goodrich (125), John Young (145), Ryan Maitlen (285) and Keaton Hulett (171)who all fell in the finals. Hulett faced No. 6 Seth Esaias. Esaias got the pin in 1:39. Goodrich lost by a 9-3 decision against Mike Thielen of Harlan. Young fell in a 11-4 decision to Cole Meet of Red Oak. Maitlen was pinned by No. 4 Matt Hoch of Harlan in 3:23

Tuesday’s dual regional at Winterset begins at 6 p.m. with Creston/O-M taking on Osceola Clarke, and Centerville meeting Harlan. The championship match follows, with the winner advancing to the State Dual Team Tournament Feb. 27 in Cedar Rapids.
