Fourth of July fun around the area
Not as many people are taking off for the Fourth of July this weekend.
Some folks have today off, while many still had to work.
The price of gas is staying down, but the number of people hitting the road is supposed to be down across the nation.
Both Osceola and Creston have a full weekend of activities planned. Both towns have carnivals going and fireworks to complete the celebration on Saturday night.
The Fourth of July is kind of the midpoint of the summer.
With many schools now starting near the middle of August, it only leaves about six weeks until school starts.
Labor Day comes late this year on Sept. 7.
Fairs
Starting after the Fourth of July celebration are the county fairs.
The CNA will be out covering many of the fairs around the area.
The Creston News Advertiser will again be one of the sponsors of the July 23 breakfast at the Union County Fair, so if you are up for breakfast that day, come on out. We are hoping for no rain at this year’s event after having to wade through 4 inches of water last year to prepare breakfast!
We are only 40 days away from the start of another Iowa State Fair. In fact, you can now purchase advanced tickets at Hy-Vee, Fareway and some True Value stores. The advanced tickets are $7 with tickets at the gate going for $10 this year.
The Iowa State Fair runs from Aug. 13-23.
Wedding recap
I can now see why it takes so long to recoup from having a wedding.
With all the guests to take care of and all the things you have to do to get ready, it is exhausting!
My son getting married last weekend was a fun time, but I hope I don’t have to go through all that again anytime soon.
Our exchange student from Finland came over for the wedding. Mira is her name. She had a great time and loved being able to shop around the area. I know she took home a couple of bags of new clothes.
The highlight of her trip seemed to be the extra large steaks we made on the grill for her one evening. I guess they don’t get that too often in Finland. It’s more of a chicken and fish country!
Tomatoes
I read where some of the tomatoes in stores are being recalled because of a late blight.
I have one tomato plant at home I’m spraying pretty hard to get rid of the blight.
My other plants seem to be doing alright.
I’m no tomato expert, but the hot weather last week really put some growth into my plants.
I.O.U.
I see the great state of California is handing out I.O.U.s since they have run out of money.
It’s not a good thing when the eighth largest “nation” in the world is out of money. California would be the eighth largest nation if it were a nation.
The problem with California is that it is a foreshadow of what is to come for many states down the line.
Too many entitlements are putting California into a world of hurt. The state hopes to make good on the I.O.U.s in October when the new budget is approved (if it is approved).
You do get 5 percent on your money while waiting for the check to become good!
