AMES — Carson Whittington and the Creston/Orient-Macksburg boys golf team won a pair of state championships here Saturday at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament.

For a while Thursday night, it looked like the Creston and Nodaway Valley baseball teams were going to battle it out in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel as Brandon Phipps and Ryan Williams kept throwing zeros up on the scoreboard.

Creston softball coach Mike McCabe said there are "building blocks" to be taken from a 9-0 loss to powerful Winterset here Thursday night.

LENOX — Six Lenox errors made it hard for the Tigers to keep pace with Exira/EHK here on Thursday, as the Spartans won 11-4.

Starting times have been changed for Creston's baseball games against Council Bluffs St. Albert on June 29.

EARLHAM — Abbey Murphy did it all for the undefeated Earlham softball team Wednesday in a 9-1 victory over Nodaway Valley.

GLENWOOD — Glenwood coach Shane Keeling praised his squad's teamwork in setting up scoring opportunities in a 4-1 Class 2A substate semifinal victory over Creston here Wednesday night.

The Creston/O-M boys golf team and the tennis doubles team of Colby Taylor and Bryce McIlravy are involved in state tournament action this weekend.

CORNING — Corning score nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 14-12 win over Bedford here on Tuesday.

ORIENT — Orient-Macksburg scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to score a 4-3 win in extra innings over East Union here on Tuesday.

HARLAN — Harlan defeated the Nodaway Valley/West Central Valley/Adair-Casey girls Tuesday night, 2-1.

WINTERSET — Two quick goals in the opening 10 minutes — prior to a 40-minute weather delay — was just enough cushion for the Creston boys soccer team to prevail over Winterset, 3-2, in a Class 2A substate opener Monday night at McGaffin Field.

CORNING — Creston took an 8-1 in the first two innings in cruising to a 16-2 season-opening victory over Corning's baseball team Monday.

CORNING — A quick start in the first inning gave Creston sophomore pitcher Haylee LaMasters a 4-0 cushion to work with, and despite having to work out of jams throughout the game, it was enough of a cushion for LaMasters as Creston defeated Corning in the season opener here on Monday, 13-3.

LAMONI — Lamoni jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play and held on for a 3-1 win over Lenox here on Monday.

NEWTON — The Creston/Orient-Macksburg girls golf team finished its season with a ninth-place performance at Monday's Class 3A Region 2 golf tournament here at Westwood Golf Club.

CLARINDA — The Lenox baseball team opened its season with a 16-6 win against Clarinda Academy here on Monday.

GREENFIELD — Des Moines Christian scored five goals in the first half to sail past Nodaway Valley in a Class 1A substate opener Monday.

CORNING — Brian Foote came back from a disqualification last week to win the Poet Biorefining modified feature, and Northland pro-stocker Tony Hardisty got his second win of the year after mechanical problems had sidelined him a week ago.

DES MOINES — Briar Evans and Jay Wolfe each broke a school record at the Coed State Track Meet over the weekend.

CARROLL — In the end, it was Creston/O-M's balance that lifted the Panthers to a district championship level here Friday.

NORWALK — Veteran Red Oak tennis coach Dan Martinez, who also coaches basketball, compared Saturday's hotly-contested substate team tennis final with Creston/O-M to one of those classic Hawkeye 10 barnburners in a packed gymnasium.

DES MOINES — Murray junior Kate Patton and Corning senior Tiffany Shepherd racked up the medals at the Coed State Track Meet here Friday and Saturday, finishing with a combined medal count of seven.
